Registering Extreme IMs

Extreme IMs is a shareware program. You are given 15 days to evaluate the program to determine if you like Extreme IMs enough to use it after your evaluation period has expired. After your 15 day trial has ended, the program will not work until you purchase a registration code.

What benefits do you get from registering Extreme IMs? Unlimited usage! By purchasing a registration code, you will be able to use Extreme IMs as long as you have your America Online account, free of nag screens and the 5 second delay at startup.

Registration will also promote further development and enhancement of the program, but most of all, will give you the personal satisfaction of doing the right thing! :)

In order to register, load Extreme IMs, wait for the 5 second count-down to finish, and when the Registration Screen comes up, click on the Purchase Extreme IMs button. If you have already started the program, you will be sent to a web page where you can order Extreme IMs Online on a secure server.

Click Here to Purchase Extreme IMs Securely Online!

Starting Extreme IMs

In order to start the program, minimize any windows you have open and double-click on the Extreme IMs icon. You can also start the program by clicking Start -> Programs -> Ignite Software -> Extreme IMs.

Loading AOL
If AOL is not loaded, Extreme IMs will start AOL for you! If AOL is loaded but you have not yet registered, you must start Extreme IMs offline. To start Extreme IMs while signed on to AOL, you must first register the program. :)

Starting a Different copy of AOL
If you find that Extreme IMs is loading a different copy of AOL than you would like, then changing the association is simple! Simply start the copy of AOL that you want to be used then start Extreme IMs. It will then remember the copy of AOL that is open and load it the next time you start Extreme IMs with AOL closed.

The Registration Form

When you first load Extreme IMs, you will see a colorful and attractive introduction screen. If AOL is being loaded, a message will tell you in the lower right hand corner of the intro screen. Once the loading has completed, a registration form will come up. Near the top you will see a box. This box is used to register the software. Once you have registered, you will receive an email with a number to type into that box. This will register the program and remove the annoying 5 second delay at startup.

Below the registration box, you will see a message that says how many days you have left in your trial period. After 15 days, you will be able to start the program, but instead of being able to "Continue your 15 Day Evaluation", you will have the option to either Exit or purchase Extreme IMs.

Getting Past the Registration Screen
There are 2 ways you can get past the registration screen. The first is to purchase a registration number that will be emailed to you (usually within 24 hours of ordering). Input the registration number and you will never have to see the registration screen again. The second way is to press the "Continue your 15 Day Evaluation" button on the lower left-hand side of the form.

Please note that the button will be disabled for 5 seconds before you can click it and enter the program. Registering removes this annoying limitation.

Your New IM Window

One of the first things you will see when you send or receive an Instant Message is the new style IM window. Instead of having a window for each IM, cluttering your screen, Extreme IMs compiles all your instant messages into one easy window! Each IM is assigned its own tab, so you always know who your talking to.

Want to know when someone IMs you? Extreme IMs makes this incredibly simple. When you receive an Instant Message, the arrow next to the name turns red! This makes it very easy to tell who you have not responded to. Once you do reply to someone with a red arrow, the arrow will then turn gray until you receive a reply from them.

Features of your New IM Window

IMs Outside AOL
You can view your IMs outside the AOL window. This is helpful if you are doing several things at once and still want to view your conversations. You can access this feature by either clicking the "
Options" button on your IM window or going to General Options and checking "Float IMs Outside AOL Window".

Hide/Show Extra Buttons
With this you can give your IMs a little more space by hiding the top 4 buttons in your Extreme IM window. You can access this feature by clicking the "Options" button on your IM window.

Ignore Screen Name...
You can Ignore the selected screen name using this option. It will load the Ignore Options and allow you to turn off IMs from this person. You can also permanently ignore this person if you so choose. You can access this feature by clicking the "Options" button on your IM window.

Review/Save IM
This option will copy the current IMs text into a new AOL window so you can easily review the conversation, save it, or even print it from AOL. You can access this feature by clicking the "Options" button on your IM window.

New IM Buttons

Locate
With this button, you can immediately locate the person you are talking to on the AOL service.

E-Mail
This button automatically opens an email addressed to the person you are talking to.

Skin IM
This button will load the Colors and Skins options where you can change the color and appearance of your IMs and buttons.

Notify AOL
This button will open a window so you can notify AOL of any TOS violations.

Get Profile
This button will get the AOL profile of the IM you are currently viewing.

Close IM
This button will close the selected IM only. If you have more than one IM tab, the window will stay open. If you have only one IM, your enhanced IM window will be closed until another IM is started.

Auto-Accept AIM Messages - When checked Instant messages from Internet users will be automatically loaded into your Extreme IMs window. Note that if you have AIM IMs or the specific screen name ignored the IM will not be loaded, even if this option is checked.

Float IMs Outside AOL Window - Checking this option will allow you to view your IMs outside the AOL window. If "IMs Always On Top" is checked it will float on top of all other windows. This is convenient if you are doing many things at once (typing a report etc.) when you can't have AOL visible but you still want to see your IMs at all times.

Colors and IM Skins

Are you tired of looking at the same old boring AOL Instant Message? Give your IMs some personality and style with IM Skins and Background Colors!

What are IM Skins & Background Colors?
Extreme IMs gives you the ability to replace AOL's boring IM background with a new, enhanced background. You can choose a background color, or tile any image you have stored on your computer behind your IMs. The styles, looks, and colors you can create are endless!

Choosing a Skin
Extreme IMs comes with many images that you can use as your IM background. Your current IM background skin is visible in the first box you see in the Colors and Skins options. To change the look of your IMs simply click the "Select an Image to Skin" button. From there you can choose any image on your computer to tile onto your Instant Message background!

Using a Background Color
If you want to use a simple background color rather than a tiled image, simply check the "Disable IM Skins and use IM Background Colors". Once that is done, the "IM Background Color" area will enable and you will be able to select a background color.

Standard IM Colors
When this is checked, your IM background will revert to the standard AOL white-beige background. You will not be able to change background colors while this is checked.

Changing your Button Colors
With Extreme IMs you can completely customize the look of your Instant Messages, and that includes the buttons! You can change the button color, the button-down color, and the button text color with just a few clicks.

You will see 3 small colored buttons on top of one "Example Button". From left to right, the first color button will select the button background color. This is the color you will see most often so pick a color you like. :) The middle small button selects the "button-down" color. When you click a button, the background will change to this color. The third button from the left is the text color button. Clicking this will allow you to change the text color of all the buttons in Extreme IMs.

Ignore Options

Extreme IMs provides you with a variety of ways to enhance your online experience, including several methods that you can use to Ignore troublesome or annoying users.

Where are the Ignore Options?
There are several ways you can access your Ignore functions. In the AOL menu under "Extreme IMs" you can click the "Ignore IMs
" option and that will automatically load them. You can also load them by clicking the IM button on your AOL 6.0 toolbar and selecting Ignore Options.

"SPAM" IMs
Often while in public and member chat rooms you will receive an unsolicited Instant Message, usually from someone using AOL Instant Messenger. This can get very bothersome after a while so we have included a feature to automatically ignore those pesky AIM Instant Messages, but still be able to accept your friends who use AIM.

Ignoring All AIM Instant Messages
When checked, Extreme IMs will automatically ignore all Internet Instant Messages. If you have friends that use AIM and you don't want to ignore them, simply add their screen name to the Except: list. To add names to your Exception list simply type the users screen name that you don't want ignored and click "Add" or press Enter. If you ever want to remove a name from your list simply select it from the drop-down list and click the "Delete" button. Also, if you want to clear all the names in your "Except" list simply click the "Clear" button and press OK to confirm.

Turn On/Off Instant Messages from Screen Name:
This is where you can temporarily ignore a screen name until you sign off AOL. To ignore someone, type their screen name in the box and click the "IMs Off" button. If you want to turn IMs back on for that person, simply click "IMs On". Once you either turn IMs on or Off AOL will ask you to confirm it with an OK.

Please remember that if you ignore someone by turning their IMs off, AOL will automatically turn them back on once you sign off and sign back on again.

Always Ignore These Screen Names
You can use this option to Always ignore a certain screen name. To add a screen name simply click "Add Screen Name" and type in the name you want to permanently ignore until you decide to remove them from this list.

Optional "Expiration date" on Always Ignored Names
Now you can optionally add an "expiration date" to any screen name on your permanent ignore list. After you click "Add Name" and type in a screen name to ignore, you will be given the option to set a time limit on this ignore. You can select any number of days for this feature. Once the days have elapsed, the screen name will automatically be removed from the ignore list!

Nickname Options

Extreme IMs comes with power Nickname creating, editing, and saving functions. So what are nicknames for anyway? When you normally receive an IM it will load into the Extreme IMs window and display the persons screen name in the tab. By assigning a nickname to that person you can more easily identify who is IMing you right away, because instead of the screen name appearing in the tab, the nickname will appear.

Where are the Nickname Options?
Nickname Options can be accessed by selecting the Extreme IMs AOL menu and clicking "Nicknames". You can access the quick Nickname editor by right-clicking on the tabbed area of your IM window and selecting "Edit Nickname"

Creating & Editing Nicknames
There are two ways you can create and edit Nicknames. One is by accessing your Extreme IMs AOL menu and selecting "
Nicknames". From there you can view all of the Nicknames you have assigned and you can easily create new names or edit old names by typing the screen name and associated nickname in the boxes.

When using the Nickname editor in your Extreme IM Options you will see that several features have been included to make creating and editing nicknames as easy as possible for you. By selecting an existing nickname in the lower box, that will automatically load the nickname in the editor (the Screen Name and Nickname boxes). From there, simply make your changes and click the "Add/Edit Nickname" button and the changes will take place instantly.

Remove Nickname - Removes the selected nickname from your list.

Refresh - If you create a nickname while your options window is open, the nickname list will not update itself automatically. To view the nickname additions/changes since you loaded your Extreme IM options, simply click Refresh! :)

Quick Nickname Editor
While your IM window is open you can right-click on the tab area to bring up a menu. From there select "Edit Nickname". A window will then appear where you can edit Nicknames! The screen name will already be loaded in the "Screen Name:" box. If this person has no nickname, the "Nickname:" box will be empty. If they had one before the nickname will be automatically loaded so you can edit it to your liking.

Deleting a Nickname Using the Quick Nickname Editor
If a person has a Nickname but you want to delete it using the Quick Nickname editor, simply leave the Nickname box empty and press Enter. The persons Nickname will then be replaced with their screen name.

Auto-Answer Options

Extreme IMs comes with a set of Auto-Answering tools. These are useful while you are away from your computer, but still want to respond to the people that IM you. There are two types of away messages. You can use general away messages for the mass population that IMs you, and you can create personalized away messages for individual screen names, to give your replies that personal touch.

Turning On Auto-Answer
To turn on Auto-Answering, simply load the options (AOL Menu - Extreme IMs - Auto-Answer) and check the "Auto-Answer IMs" box. You will know when they are enabled because when your IM window is open, at the top it will say "Extreme IMs - [Auto-Answer On]". To turn Auto-Answer off, simply uncheck the box and everything will revert back to normal.

Creating a New General Away Message
To create a General message, click the "Add New" button next to the top box. You will be prompted to enter a name for the message you are about to create (I.E. Away at Lunch). Type the name of the message and press enter. You will then be prompted to type the actual away message. Type whatever message you want and press enter. Congratulations! You have just created a new away message! :)

Selecting which General Away Message to Use
You'll notice that you can create many different away messages. But how do you know which one is in use? Simple. The last message you clicked on will be the general away message that will be used. You can tell which one is selected because the selected message will have a gray background, and the rest will be white.

Creating a New Personalized Away Message
To create a Personalized message, click the "Add Screen Name" button next to the second box. You will be prompted to enter a screen name for the person this message is to. For example, if you wanted to create an away message for AOL screen name "
Ignite Software", you would type in "Ignite Software" in the box and press enter. After entering the screen name, you will be asked to type in your personalized away message for this person. Type whatever message you want for that person and press enter. Congratulations! You have just created a new personalized away message! :)

Editing Existing General and Personalized Away Messages
There may come a time where you want to edit the contents of an away message. To edit an away message (it can be either General or Personal), simply click it in the list. The text for the away message will appear in the last box, and the name of the message you are currently editing will be displayed in blue above the box. Simply make your changes and click the red "Save Changes" button.

Deleting Away Messages
To delete a general or personalized away message, simply highlight the message you want to delete and click the corresponding "Delete Message" button. You will be asked to confirm. Press "Yes" and the message will be deleted. Please note that this is permanent, and you won't be able to retrieve the message once deleted.

Conversation Logging Options

Extreme IMs gives you powerful Instant Message logging capabilities. Have you ever wanted to keep a record of your conversations? With the help of Extreme IMs this becomes completely automatic! Your IMs are automatically logged in individual folders by screen name, and then again by date.

Where are my Conversation Logging Options?
You can directly access the logging functions by clicking the "Extreme IMs" AOL menu and selecting "IM Logging" from the menu.

How Logging Works
The concept of logging is simple - all of your conversations that take place in an Instant Message are automatically saved to a file once you close the IM.

If you want to turn logging off, simply uncheck the "Logging Enabled" box.

Viewing your IM Logs
When you open the Extreme IM logging options, you will see two boxes. The box on the left will contain folders with the screen names you have conversation logs of. To view the logs that you have saved from a screen name, simply select the folder! The log files will appear in the box on the right. To actually view the contents of the log, simply double-click on the file you want to view (or click the "View Chat Log" button below). Your log file will be opened using Microsoft WordPad. From there you can easily
edit and print your log file.

Deleting your IM Logs
You can delete log files in one of two ways. You can delete each file individually by opening a screen name folder, selecting the file you want to delete and clicking the "Delete Chat Log" button below. To delete an entire folder and the logs inside it, highlight the folder and click the "Delete Selected Folder" button.

Buddy Notes

Buddy Notes is a simple tool that allows you to jot down notes for individual screen names so you can review them later.

Where are my Buddy Notes?
There are two ways you can access someones Buddy Notes. You can right-click in the tabbed area of your IM window and select the option "
View Buddy Notes" or you can click the "Options" button on your IM window and select "Show Buddy Notes".

What can I do with Buddy Notes?
While the function of buddy notes is simple, it can be used for many different things. You could use it as an easy way to save a collection of interesting comments made by your friends, or you can save a buddy note for someone that still owes you money! :) To save the notes after you have typed them, simply click the "Close & Save" button and the next time you view that persons buddy notes the saved text will be there.

Playing WAVs in IMs

This is a quick tutorial to learn about .WAV files, what they do, and how you hear them in your Instant Messages.

What is a .WAV File?
WAV files are like any other file on your hard drive, except that they are named with the ".wav" extension. This type of file stores audio information, so when you double-click on one, you will hear a song, sound byte, voice recording, or effect - or whatever kind of audio is stored in the file! :)

How do I Play .WAV files in my IMs?
If you know how to play .wav files in an AOL chat room, you know how to play them using Extreme IMs! If your new to playing WAV files in AOL, or want a quick refresher course, please read on. :)

{S Welcome}

Above is an example of a wav you can play in an IM. Extreme IMs searches in 4 areas for the name of the sound you type in. Below are the 4 directories that are searched for the name of the sound you type.

America Online Directory
America Online Directory\Sounds
America Online Directory\Download
WINDOWS\Media

For instance, if you have a sound called "welcome.wav" in your AOL\Sounds directory, all you need to do is type {S welcome} and the sound will be played. You can include the .wav extension if you want, i.e. {S welcome.wav}. Either way will work. :)

If you have .WAV files in a seperate directory, you could always move or copy them to your AOL or WINDOWS\Media folder, or you could just specify the entire path in the IM to play it! Below is an example:

{S C:\America Online 6.0\Sounds\Welcome.wav}

Using the above method you can play any .wav file on your computer as long as you know where it is.

Below are a few different ways that you can play a .wav in an IM. Just like in an AOL chat room, you do not require the closing bracket. We just think it looks better. :) Try a few of these out using our various supported formats and see if they work for you:

{S Welcome
{S Gotmail
{S Drop.wav
{S The Microsoft Sound}
{S C:\WINDOWS\Media\The Microsoft Sound.wav}

Well, that ends the Playing WAVs in IMs tutorial. Enjoy, and happy waving! :)

Why Can't I hear the Sounds?
Here is a quick list of things to check if you can't hear .wav files in IMs:

Do you have speakers and a sound card? If you do not have external speakers on your computer you will not be able to hear sounds.

Does the sound file exist on your computer? If the sound is not present in the searched directories listed in the tutorial, you will not be able to hear them. Both PCs must have the sound file for both of you to hear them. If it does exist make sure you typed the name correctly. If you have a .wav file called "The Sound.wav" and you type in {S TheSound.wav}, it will not work. You must include the spaces.

Are the speakers properly connected? Make sure to check the connections to the speakers from the back of your PC. If your speakers have their own power plug, make sure its securely in the wall.

Is the volume turned up? Make sure that you have your speakers on and the volume is turned up.

If you have passed all the previous requirements and STILL can't get wav files to work in IMs, you may be one of the unfortunate ones that this feature will not work for. During the beta testing process a few people with older sound systems on their PCs found that they could only play one sound at a time on their computer. This caused the IM sound to then block out the wav file that is played right after the IM sound.
